Introduction

When your OEM Brake Pedal / Brake Light stopper disintegrates after continued use it tends to leave the brake lights on in Nissan 240SX vehicles. usually when this part goes bad its not a big deal, but in our 240SX vehicles it completely kills the battery if not caught. This guide will quickly detail how to replace the stopper.

  1. One of the most annoying things that can happen to a 240SX driver is to have their Brake Light Stopper go out

    • As this picture shows, when it goes out it maintains the brake lights on and if not caught can completely drain your battery. The keys are out of the ignition and yet the lightsremain on

  2. Over time the stopper becomes extremely brittle and stiff. The continuous exposure to the force applied by the light sensor is enough to break it over time after it has become brittle.

  3. This is what a new brake light stopper looks like. We are not 100% if they have changed the design of these but as you can see it looks a lot softer than the previous image.

  4. Here is the exact location of the stopper. Its located above the steering column bracket. The empty hole you see is where the rubber stopper is inserted in order to push on the sensor for the brake lights to shut off.

    • Press on the brake to create space here and insert the stopper. It just has to go on enough to give you time to pull the brake up. This motion will then fully insert the rubber stopper.

  5. Once installed this is how that same area should look like. When un-pressed the stopper should be pressing on the sensor and thus shutting off your tail lights.

    • And that's how one fixes the continuously on Tail Light problem.

This is exactly the issue on my 1993 NISSAN D21 Hard body Pickup. Your EXCELLENT pictures and description on the repair are the best I have found after researching the issue online for hours. Many other sites offered incorrect advice and analysis, but this is the simplest and most likely CORRECT answer for most people who experience BRAKE LIGHTS WON’T TURN OFF AFTER ENGINE IS TURNED OFF on a NISSAN > I hope this response is elevated in the search engines because it will save everyone time and money because YOU ARE CORRECT.
